Equilateral Footstool-Part 1

As they say…”no good deed…”

Management decided that, since my Asymmetrical Footstool turned out “OK“, I needed to build another to be gifted as a Christmas present.  You all know Christmas…that holiday that is only seven days away!!  I explained all of the issues surrounding material and time.  I made a compelling argument against the probability of getting a footstool completed.  She listened, nodded in understanding of my points and told me… Continue reading

Asymmetric Footstool-Part 3-Complete

The legs and the underside of the top received a couple of coats of Tried & True Original oil finish.  Once that had dried it was time to tackle the upholstery.  Note that I left all of my layout lines intact.  They may prove useful, or at least interesting, to someone in the future.  In the short-term, I can flip the footstool over bore anyone who will listen as to how I made it.  Kinda’ like what I do here on this blog. LOL Continue reading

Asymmetric Footstool-Part 2

With my design in hand and materials at the ready, it was time to get started.  The first step was to cut my 24″x48″ sheet of ply into two 24″x24″ sections and glue up my slab.  Nothing fancy to report here.  Slather glue on the mating surfaces and clamp them together.  I will say that the whole process was made easier with a glue roller and judicious use of screws as clamps. Asymmetric Footstool-Part 1

I decided that I need a footstool.  Not that I have a lot of time for putting my feet up, but I at least want the option.  With that decision made, I moved on to design.

img_0242The lowly footstool has existed in just about every shape and form that can be imagined.  Not that the footstool has been the focus of designers throughout the ages, but that it has been a piece ubiquitous furnishing.  No matter the time period or the economic status, everyone seems to have need of a footstool.  This gives me an almost endless array of choices.  So naturally I came up with my own version.  Well, loosely based upon this photo of a mid-century version. Longboard?-Part 2-Complete

I’m a little late getting this post put together.  My nephew and I completed his longboard on Thanksgiving day.  We, for the second year, hosted the big dinner at our house. Continue reading

Longboard?-Part 1

My nephew was in from college a couple of weeks ago and told me that he had a project for us to work on over the long Thanksgiving break.

me..”Sure, no problem.  What do you want to make?”

him…”A new deck for my longboard.”

Since I’m the uncle who can do “anything”…”Sure, no problem.”

…and that is where we left it, until now. Continue reading

My Stamp of Approval

I finally gave into vanity and pulled the trigger on a custom logo stamp.  I say finally because I have saved the money for this several times over the past few years, but always talked myself out of buying it for one reason or another.  The fact that I have a logo at all may seem a little odd to some of you.  I could just sign my name to my drawings and the things that I make, but…the idea of having an identifying mark has always appealed to me more than having my name on something.  There’s a big long story behind the why and how of my logo design coming into being, but I’ll spare you from having to read about any of that.  This post is about my new stamp. Concluding the Kanna Journey-Actually Just the Beginning

img_2587

OK…I’m sure that you all are getting tired of my posting about kanna.  I have to admit that it does seem like my life has been all kanna, all the time for the last several weeks.  Even management has been asking when I’m going to actually build something again. Continue reading

Kanna on the Cheap

Earlier this week I need to place an order thru Amazon.  Since I have been doing so much searching on the internet for kanna, Amazon presented me with some “suggested items”.  One those was a very inexpensive little block plane in the form of a Japanese kanna.  Out of pure curiosity I spent the ~$19.00 and added the plane to my order. Continue reading

Kanna Fabrication Notes-with Notes

After reading a few of the comments from my last post it is clear that I should have added a little background information pertaining to the drawings that I posted on kanna fabrication.  I’ve been so immersed in this subject that what may seem obvious to me, may not actually present that way to the masses.  So here we go: Continue reading
