I didn’t get a lot of shop time this week. Just too busy with the everyday stuff that we all have to deal with. I did manage to glue and peg the two arched aprons to their corresponding shelves though. Continue reading
My current project is a bookcase. When I worked out the design I chose to add a simple decorative cutout to the side panels. Nothing complex, actually a fairly common motif, four intersecting circles. Once I decided to add it, I immediately began thinking of Continue reading
At first glance this wide bookcase is pushing, maybe exceeding, the strength limits of most woods, especially pine. However, I assure you that it is not and I thought that I would address the structural choices/solutions that I have employed in this design. I’ll begin at the top and work my way down. Progress marches on. By drips and drabs over the course of the week and with a little more gusto this weekend.
Most evenings this past week I was able to slip out into the workshop and chip away at the bookcase. I managed to cut and size the parts for the angled shelf and the lower shelf that is located just above the drawers. I then glued and pegged together the two boards that make up the angled shelf and set them aside to dry.
Once I had the bottom and lower shelf fitted, I could locate and cut the required Continue reading
With a warmup project out of the way, I decided that it was time to start the bookcase. So Saturday morning I made a quick trip to the Home Depot and rummaged thru the pine stacks until I found enough pieces that I could work with. I ended up bringing (4) 1x12x8ft boards of clear pine home with me. That should be enough lumber for the carcass with the drawers being another matter altogether. Continue reading
As I was finishing the little Side Table, I used my last piece of 220 sandpaper. That may not sound like a big deal to most of you, but it meant something to me. A little over two years ago I purchased a twenty sheet pack of 220grit sandpaper, quartered the sheets and stored them in a little holder ala. Paul Sellers. So eighty quarter sheets of sandpaper has lasted me over two years. Not too bad. Continue reading
Progress today on the little side table project. So far the new shop space is working out great and I’m really liking the extra space to move around in. Plus, working in an attached garage feels almost like working in the house. Walk out one door and I’m in the shop.
Once I freed my clamps from the base assembly I tackled the panel glue-up for the top to this table. I literally had just these two pieces of oak, so my options for grain matching were pretty limited and I did the best with what I had to work with. This top will receive a very dark, almost black, stain and the grain should blend fairly well when all is said and done. Continue reading
For the handful of you that read this drivel on a regular basis you are probably starting to think that I have developed age-onset ADHD or maybe worse. First I droned on about nightstands, then a bookcase and now a side table. Too much time out of the shop but I am now remedying that little problem. To put the new shop area through its paces I decided to tackle a simple project from the “need” list and that is a side table. This will be built around the same style and finishing of the end tables that I built last year. It will be a little lower, a little wider and a little shorter. Hows that for specifics?
